The Fisher F2 metal detector is an excellent entry-level device well suited to getting the amateur, first-time treasure hunter up and running quickly.
For example, the F2’s has a two digit numeric display that indicates the type of metal that has been located. This feature will save the average treasure hunter the frustration of striking on pop tops, even in high traffic locations like ball parks and beaches.
The F2 really is a great machine that has many features at an excellent, entry-level price that most people will be able to afford.

F2 Amazon Ratings
The Fisher F2 has got some amazing reviews on Amazon, with the average rating coming in at 4.6 out of 5 with over 35 reviews. Many of the people who have left reviews state that they really like the different sounds that the detector makes when identifying particular metals and the great price tag combined with plenty of great features.
Most users enjoy that the package comes with 2 coils, but they also state that the pin pointer that comes with the F2 feels flimsy and of poor construction. This is about the only negative comment I could find. Unfortunately when I used the F2, I didn’t have access to the included pin pointer so I cannot really comment on that, but I do know that Garrett pin pointers work really well and only cost around $100.
The Fisher F2 Metal Detector is designed for the entry-level hobbyist. It has a number of features that support that design objective. These include:
- Visual and audio target identification – with 8 visual segments and 4 audio tones
- Quick and very sensitive target response
- Large display with 2 digit numeric target value – this makes things really simple for the hobbyist treasure hunter
- Numeric depth readout
- One touch target pinpointing
- Coin depth indicator when in Motion Search Mode – The coin depth indicator is a really great feature of the F2 and is probably my pick of the entry level coin detecting machines
- Notch system for accepting/rejecting targets
- 5.9 kHz operating frequency
Videos of the Fisher F2 Metal Detector
There really isn’t too much to cover on this particular detector that I haven’t already spoken about, but this video by Fisher offers an excellent introduction to the device.
If you want an impartial view of the F2 (as in not he official video) then I found this review to be quite accurate and really good to watch.
My Final Verdict
The Fisher F2 is one of the best entry-level metal detectors on the market. It is designed for the novice user or hobbyist that only goes treasure hunting occasionally.
The F2 really shines when it comes to coin shooting as it has a great built in coin depth indicator to tell you exactly how far you should be digging to find coins. The other thing that I really like about this detector is that it works pretty much straight out of the box with the default settings. This makes it perfect for people who don’t want to fiddle around with different settings and just want to get started.
Given its combination of price, weight, ease of operation and other features, if you are just starting out, the F2 may be the device for you.
